It feels like summer—if you’re at the gas pump.
The average price for a regular gallon of gas in the New York metro area is now at $4, a high normally seen as the summer driving season approaches. See AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge report.
Even before last week’s blizzard, the rising cost of crude oil and lingering refinery problems from Superstorm Sandy had been pushing up prices, AAA New York spokesman Robert Sinclair said.
“Certain unique circumstances in our region have left us vulnerable to higher gasoline prices at a time when they are usually flat,” he said.
And they are expected to keep surging, especially after an oil refinery in Port Reading, N.J. closes at the end of the month, he said.
Still, New Jersey is home to much cheaper fuel than New York, thanks to lower gas taxes. The average price for a regular gallon in the Garden State was $3.56 a gallon on Monday.
