Welcome to Commuter Life, a new blog dedicated to all things transit and the people who travel LoHud’s roads and rails every day.
I’m Theresa Juva-Brown, LoHud.com’s new commuting reporter, and I’ll be counting on you to share your stories, tips, and ideas to make this a go-to place for commuters.

A little bit about myself. From crime, breaking news, and government to schools and health, there are few beats I haven’t covered during my four years at The Journal News/LoHud.com. And I definitely know what it’s like to have a long trek to work, because I live in Queens and drive to White Plains five days a week. To have a job I enjoy every day, I’ve made my peace with long EZ-Pass lines, inevitable toll hikes, and Friday afternoon gridlock.
Enough about me. Let’s talk about you. What kinds of stories do you want to read? What issues are important to you? And most importantly, when you talk to your friends and family about your commute, what topic/concern seems to come up again and again? I have a feeling I know what it is, but I want to hear it from you! Leave your comments below, or email me at tjuva@lohud.com. Safe travels!

commuting in Westchester has become unbearable. I live northern county and work in Stamford, CT. With construction on the Taconic, construction on 287 and now construction on 95 (which back all the way up to 287 which is always a mess anyway), my commute has increased by 30 to 45 minutes! Alternate routes are no better (route 9/9A is always backed up). There is just so much construction going on everywhere within the county and no resolution.
Thanks for responding! How long does your commute usually take? What about with all those delays?
I am usually commuting any where from 1.15 to 2 hours – depending on traffic, weather…etc. Have they thought about increasing buses or additional public transportation options?
Hmm, I’m not sure. Is that something you have looked into? Is there a Metro-North line you could catch? How long have you been making this trip?
I agree with the commuter above except I am coming from White plains going to Stamford and with the recent addition of construction on 95 it is becoming unbearable at times. My commute is anywhere between 30-40 mins to go 16 miles thats with normal to moderate traffics. With all the traffic and trucks its enough but add an accident and your looking at over an hour and half to go 16 miles!!! My job just moved to Stamford in december so its been about 4 months. I’m contemplating just taking the train from Rye at this point esp now that gas is 4.45 a gallon for me.
I commuted from Rockland to NYC five days a week, 13 years by bus, and for the last year, by train. And thirty years ago, I commuted by car and bus for several years. Four weeks ago, I was moved to my company’s office in northern NJ, which is only five miles from my home.
I only have to go into NYC one day a week, now. It’s an hour and 30 minutes one way on a good day…and good days are pretty rare. My trip to my new location takes 15 minutes, tops, and that’s if I don’t make all the green lights, lol. I love my new commute, and I’m actually using less gas since I can run errands along the way home if I plan ahead and don’t have to make special trips out later.
Wow, that’s definitely a commute many of us envy—if you want to even call it that! I would love it if I could walk to work!
Nancy—I was once in your shoes. I had always commuted as well then I purposely moved to White Plains to enjoy a 10 mins commute to work only for work to move to Stamford and so I’m back to commuting. :/ It was good while it lasted!
Mickey – Unfortunately, this will not last, either. Company will move in a year or two to new locations in the NYC area. I’m not sure whether I will have my old commute back into Manhattan, or just a train ride to Hoboken, but right now, I’m enjoying the extra three hours a day I have back in my life. It feels like a vacation!
